Shere, Surrey

It is nice to be home for the summer. The wisteria and irises - my favourites - are in full bloom and the temperature, in the low 20s, is just right for a day's outing.

We've been trying to find some nice restaurants in Surrey for some time and eventually discovered one that serves food of a reasonable standard and price, and with decent service. So it was a delight to have Sunday lunch with friends at Kingham's at Shere, a charming little village in Surrey. The rooms in the restaurant are quite small and a bit claustrophobic with low beams. Thankfully, the other diners, mostly families celebrating birthdays, were perfectly civilized and kept noise to a minimum. After dining at far too many gastro pubs, it was a nice change to see crisp white linen on the table together with white linen napkins.

Roast pork with rosti and cubed apples

Treacle tart with pineapple dipped in ginger sauce

And here's a haiku to close:

Sun drenched summer blooms
Cloudscape on the canvas sky
Sweet symbiosis
