Hamburg Series - Rathaus

The Hamburg Rathaus is flamboyantly ostentatious, with magnificent interiors to match the splendid exteriors.
The elaborately decorated facade, flanked by a total of 20 statues of emperors. It is a statement piece of architecture: impressive, grand, magnificent.
The frieze at the top of the landing. The paintings take us through the various stages of life. At the left hand panel is a wedding scene. The ivory and gold make a glorious combination.
The debating chamber, characteristically restrained. At one corner of the room was the remnant of a mural. The mural was painted over during the Nazi period because it was considered that murals would detract participants from the serious business of political and legislative processes.
Embossed leather wall covering present in a lot of the rooms. The handicraft is exquisite.
Painted ceilings and elaborate chandeliers that proclaim the wealth and prosperity of the city. According to literature, the building of the Rathaus cost €80m in today's money.

The Grand Ballroom. A total of five huge paintings depict the history of Hamburg. The three chandeliers each weigh 1,500 kilograms. Statistics apart, imagine elegantly dressed couples gliding and waltzing the night away in this magnificent room.
The view of Town Hall Square from the Balcony.
